The Chlorine Question: Why Washing Won't Save You From This Parasite
(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — Kitchen produce washes have turned into a small obsession this summer. Vinegar rinses. Baking soda soaks. Debates online about whether the chlorine used on bagged salad is doing anything at all. All of it is happening because a parasite has sickened more than 4,000 people in 31 states, and nobody has figured out where it's coming from.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had confirmed 843 domestic cases of cyclosporiasis as of July 9, with more than 1,500 additional cases still under review. NBC News, tallying state health department reports, put the national total above 4,000 as of July 13. Michigan has been hit hardest, with more than 2,600 infections and 44 hospitalizations as of July 10, about 50 times its usual yearly count.
California has logged 41 provisional cases this year, actually down from 80 over the same stretch in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Health. Most involved recent international travel. None have been tied to the multistate clusters under federal investigation, and none anywhere in the country have been traced to Ventura County growers.
What's actually making people sick
Cyclosporiasis comes from Cyclospora cayetanensis, a microscopic parasite spread through food or water contaminated with human waste. It cannot spread person to person. Symptoms, mainly watery diarrhea, cramping, fatigue and loss of appetite, usually show up one to two weeks after exposure and can drag on for weeks without treatment. A 10-day course of the antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, sold as Bactrim among other brands, clears it up.
Past U.S. outbreaks have traced back to imported cilantro, basil and raspberries. No specific grower, supplier or item has been named as the source of this year's surge.
Does the chlorine actually work
Short answer: it's real, and it's not built for this.
Commercial processors of bagged salad and other ready-to-eat produce commonly run product through water treated with sodium hypochlorite, generally in the range of 50 to 200 parts per million, as a standard step to knock down bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella. It is one of the most widely used tools in the industry for that purpose.
The trouble is that Cyclospora is not a bacterium. It travels inside a thick-walled oocyst built to survive outside a host for long stretches, and that same wall shrugs off routine chemical disinfectants, according to guidance from the University of Florida's food safety extension program. Kalmia Kniel, a food microbiologist at the University of Delaware, has said surface texture matters more than where produce was purchased. Cyclospora oocysts stick more easily to textured surfaces like raspberries and cilantro leaves than to smooth ones like blueberries, and produce with an outer layer that gets removed, such as avocados or the outer leaves of lettuce, carries lower risk no matter where it came from.
Some early research has looked at ozone treatment as a possible improvement, with lab studies suggesting ozonated water can interfere with the parasite's ability to mature into an infectious form. That work has so far used lab conditions rather than a home setup, and no health authority currently recommends it as a dependable home defense.
What about vinegar and baking soda
Both have real research behind them, just not for this parasite.
A peer-reviewed study from Environmental Working Group scientists found that soaking produce in a baking soda solution cut pesticide residue by a median of roughly 51%, and a vinegar soak by roughly 54%, both outperforming plain water. Consumer Reports has cited a University of Massachusetts study in which submerging apples in a baking soda solution for 12 to 15 minutes fully removed two common pesticides. James Rogers, the outlet's director of food safety research, has said vinegar soaks can meaningfully reduce bacteria levels on greens, though they will not eliminate all of it.
None of that research addresses Cyclospora specifically, and given that even industrial-strength chlorine cannot reliably beat the parasite's protective wall, there is little reason to expect a kitchen vinegar or baking soda soak would do better. The one method with solid backing is heat. Cooking, baking or boiling produce above 158 degrees Fahrenheit breaks down the oocyst wall and neutralizes it. That is a real tradeoff for foods normally eaten raw, but it is the only step food safety researchers currently treat as reliable.
Ventura County's stake in it
Agriculture generates more than $2.3 billion a year for Ventura County, and the county leads California in avocado, lemon and raspberry production, according to the Farm Bureau of Ventura County. Raspberries are among the crops most frequently linked to past cyclospora outbreaks nationwide, because the parasite clings easily to the fruit's tiny surface hairs. That does not mean local produce carries more risk than what's on supermarket shelves. North Carolina State University's Cooperative Extension has advised that home-grown and farmers market produce can be lower risk when grown with clean water and sound practices, but it is not automatically safer just for being local.
What actually helps right now
Wash hands with soap and water before and after handling produce. Rinse everything under running water, including items that will be peeled. Scrub firm produce like cucumbers and melons with a clean brush. Buy whole heads of lettuce instead of pre-cut bags, and pull off the outer leaves before washing. Cut away bruised spots. Cook when it's an option, since heat is the one method that reliably works against this parasite.
Anyone with watery diarrhea lasting more than a few days, especially after eating raw produce, should contact a healthcare provider. Cases are reportable to local health departments even without recent travel, which is exactly the kind of detail investigators need to eventually track this outbreak back to its source.
