Simi Valley offers free landfill access and compost pickup for residents this October as part of an annual effort to reduce illegal dumping and clear household clutter.

(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — Residents can drop off unwanted items for free at the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center on Sunday, October 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The city is opening the facility at 2801 N. Madera Road to help households clear out debris while preventing illegal dumping across town.

Each household may bring up to two loads. Proof of residency is required, either a driver's license or a waste and recycling bill with a Simi Valley address. The event also accepts up to five non-commercial passenger-vehicle or pickup tires per household.

Free compost will be available for pickup during the same window. Residents are limited to two bags and must bring their own sturdy trash bags or containers, along with a shovel and gloves. Participants will load and transport compost themselves.

The city asks residents to separate recyclables from refuse before arriving and to cover all loads during transport to prevent litter. Commercial waste, hazardous materials, electronics, liquids, batteries, mercury-containing products, and fluorescent bulbs are not accepted. Commercial vehicles are also prohibited.

Household hazardous waste is handled through a separate program. The city offers free collection events on the third Saturday of every other month for residents of Simi Valley and Moorpark. Appointments are required. The next event is scheduled for Saturday, November 21, 2026. Residents can request an appointment at www.simivalley.org/hhwappointments.

The residential cleanup day serves as a regular outlet for items that accumulate in garages, sheds, and yards but do not fit into weekly waste pickup. By offering landfill access twice a year, the city reduces the likelihood that unwanted furniture, construction scraps, and other bulk materials end up dumped on roadsides or vacant lots.

The landfill and recycling center is managed by WM Solutions. More details on acceptable materials are available at www.wmsolutions.com. Residents planning to attend should arrive early if hauling large loads, as wait times can increase later in the day. The event runs rain or shine.
