A live band backs the rock opera over five weekends at the Cultural Arts Center
(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — Actors' Repertory Theatre of Simi will stage "Jesus Christ Superstar" at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center for five weekends beginning Oct. 10.
David Ralphe directs the production. Dave Watkins leads a live band backing the rock opera, which has music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice.
The show follows the final days of Jesus through the eyes of Judas, whose growing doubts strain their relationship. It focuses on the conflicts among Jesus, his disciples, the people of Israel and the leaders of Rome. It also gives special attention to the relationship between Judas and Jesus, and between Jesus and Mary Magdalene.
The score includes "Superstar" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him." The production is rooted in 1970s rock, gospel, folk and funk, with modern language and high-energy dance numbers, according to the theater's description.
Tim Rice was inspired by a Bob Dylan lyric: "Did Judas Iscariot have God on his side?" Andrew Lloyd Webber later explained the approach. "Rather than telling the story of the last six days of the life of Jesus Christ, one is actually trying to examine why it was that Judas betrayed somebody that he clearly loved."
The musical first appeared as a rock opera album in 1970 before moving to the stage. A London revival won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.
The production is suitable for ages 10 and older.
Tickets cost $37 for adults, $32 for seniors and students, and $27 for children. Group rates are available for parties of 10 or more. A $3 processing fee applies to every ticket, whether purchased online or at the box office.
The show runs five weekends at the Cultural Arts Center. Tickets and performance information are available at simi-arts.org.
