Kiwanis Club Awards $12,500 in Scholarships to 13 Local Students
(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — Thirteen high school students received a combined $12,500 in scholarships from the Kiwanis Club of Simi Valley on Wednesday, May 27, as the service organization continued its annual tradition of supporting local graduates.
Karen Cunningham, chair of the Kiwanis Scholarship Committee, opened the ceremony by introducing the scholarship recipients and recognizing the Kiwanis liaisons who work with area high schools throughout the year. Lorraine Erickson presented awards to students from Simi Valley High School, while Mary Martin handled introductions for Royal High School recipients.
Eight students from Simi Valley High School earned scholarships, along with four from Royal High School and one from Apollo High School. The awards support students pursuing various educational paths after graduation.
The May ceremony marked the second round of Kiwanis scholarships awarded this year. Earlier, the club provided funding to four students at the Career Education School in Simi Valley. That program helps young people develop practical skills for entry-level jobs or apprenticeships in trades such as construction, cosmetology and manufacturing.
"These scholarships support continuing education students pursuing careers in the skilled trades," Cunningham noted about the Career Education School awards, highlighting the club's commitment to both traditional college-bound students and those choosing vocational pathways.
The Kiwanis scholarship program addresses the rising cost of post-secondary education while recognizing academic achievement across multiple local schools.
