Garden Grove Elementary Teacher Recognized for Classroom Innovation
(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — Leslie Brooks transforms learning into an interactive experience for her second and third-grade students at Garden Grove Elementary School.
The Simi Valley Education Foundation named Brooks its June Teacher of the Month, recognizing her approach to differentiated instruction that adapts lessons to meet individual student needs. Brooks designs classroom activities that make abstract concepts tangible through hands-on projects and creative assignments.
"She is committed to creating a fun and engaging learning experience and brings learning to life in her classroom," the foundation stated in its announcement.
Brooks teaches a combined second and third-grade class, requiring her to manage curriculum for two grade levels simultaneously. Her lesson plans incorporate interactive elements that allow students at different learning stages to participate meaningfully in the same activity.
The Teacher of the Month program spotlights educators across the Simi Valley Unified School District who demonstrate exceptional classroom performance. Each monthly recipient receives recognition items from local business partners including Chick-fil-A, Grand Canyon University, Harley's Bowl, and the Simi Valley YMCA.
Iverson Construction, Logix Federal Credit Union, the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce, and the Cultural Arts Center also support the program. Financial partners include Ventura County Credit Union, Eric Little with State Farm Insurance, and the Walt Fuller Foundation.
Local officials present personalized certificates to each honoree, creating a direct connection between the school district and community leaders.

The foundation established the recognition program as part of its broader mission to strengthen public education in the district. Since 1989, the organization has invested more than $2.5 million in local schools through classroom grants, department upgrades, and scholarships for graduating seniors.
The monthly awards create visibility for teaching excellence while providing teachers with community recognition for their daily work. Recipients are selected based on their impact on student learning and contributions to their school communities.
Brooks joins previous monthly honorees who have demonstrated innovative teaching methods across the district's elementary, middle, and high schools. The program runs throughout the school year, highlighting different educators and their unique approaches to student engagement.
