America 250 Celebration to Feature Historic Performance by the Simi Valley Symphony Orchestra
(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — This Fourth of July, Simi Valley audiences will experience a first for the city: a live symphony orchestra performing a newly composed 22-minute orchestral work synchronized in real time to the city's fireworks display.
Created for America's 250th anniversary, the original score was composed by World Soundtrack Award winner Joseph Metcalfe and will receive its world premiere on July 4 as the grand finale of Simi Valley's America 250 Celebration at Rancho Simi Community Park.
Performed by the Simi Valley Symphony Orchestra, the composition tells the story of America's journey through themes of courage, exploration, innovation, perseverance and freedom, culminating in a celebration of the nation's enduring spirit and future.
The performance also reflects the growth of the Simi Valley Symphony Orchestra itself. Just a few years ago, the symphony orchestra did not exist. What began with performances at SIMI Film Fest and the Spirit of Christmas Concert in Camarillo has grown into a thriving musical community of orchestras, choir programs, youth initiatives and educational opportunities serving the region.
"This performance is really a celebration of possibility," said Metcalfe. "It's the story of a nation that dared to dream big, but it's also the story of a community that believed something remarkable could be built right here in Simi Valley."
Unlike a traditional fireworks soundtrack played through speakers, every note of the music will be performed live beneath the night sky as fireworks launch overhead. Nearly fifty musicians will perform the score in real time, creating a fully synchronized musical and visual experience.
The scope of the project drew attention during a recent City Council meeting. Mayor Pro Tem Elaine Litster highlighted the value of the commission.
"Normally when you commission a work like this, you pay tens of thousands of dollars," Litster said. "Joseph is composing and arranging this music for the community from the heart."
The live performance represents a significant artistic undertaking. Synchronizing live musicians with pyrotechnics requires precise timing and coordination. The orchestra will perform outdoors without the acoustic protections of a concert hall. Each musician must follow the conductor while fireworks detonate overhead.
Metcalfe, who won the World Soundtrack Award for his film composition work, has created a score designed to match the visual rhythm of the fireworks while maintaining its own musical structure. The 22-minute work moves through five thematic sections, each representing a different aspect of the American experience.
The America 250 Celebration will take place July 3–4 and includes the Simi 250 5K Run, the citywide $2.50 Experience, a patriotic car cruise, Movie in the Park, live entertainment, community activities, and the July 4 fireworks spectacular.
The live orchestral fireworks performance will serve as the culmination of the celebration and a tribute to America's 250th anniversary through the power of music, community and shared purpose.
For the musicians of the Simi Valley Symphony Orchestra, the performance marks a milestone. What started as a small ensemble has grown into a regional music organization with youth programs, choirs, and educational initiatives. The Fourth of July commission places the orchestra on a larger civic stage.
The event is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early at Rancho Simi Community Park to secure seating for the fireworks and live performance.
The combination of live orchestral music and synchronized fireworks has been attempted in only a handful of cities nationwide. Most Fourth of July celebrations use pre-recorded soundtracks.
The performance will be conducted in front of an outdoor audience expected to number in the thousands. Metcalfe's score was written with the specific acoustics and logistics of the outdoor performance in mind. The orchestration accounts for wind, ambient noise and the competing sound of the fireworks themselves.
The America 250 Celebration represents one of the largest civic events the city has planned for the year. The live symphony performance adds a cultural dimension to the traditional fireworks display and positions the city as a hub for both patriotic celebration and artistic ambition.
Residents will have the chance to witness a performance created specifically for their city, performed by musicians from their community, in honor of a national milestone. The music will not be repeated elsewhere. This is a one-time commission for a one-time event.
The fireworks and live orchestra will start shortly after nightfall.
