Who’s Making A Difference In Simi Valley? Nominations Open For 2026 Volunteer Award

(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — Every year, volunteers step up to make Simi Valley the best it can be for all residents. They stock food pantries, mentor kids, plant gardens, help seniors, and show up where help is needed most.

That dedication shapes daily life across the city. Now, the city is inviting residents to help recognize it.

Nominations are open for Simi Valley’s 2026 Community Volunteer of the Year Award, which honors residents who have made an exceptional difference through volunteer service. The deadline to submit a nomination is Sun., March 1.

In a statement, the city said the community depends on volunteers to support essential services, strengthen neighborhood connections and extend the reach of municipal programs.

More than 500 people contribute over 40,000 volunteer hours annually in city-owned facilities alone, with an estimated value of more than $1.4 million. That work continues through thousands of additional hours contributed by local nonprofits and service organizations.

Eligible nominees for the yearly award must be Simi Valley residents who volunteered within the city over the past year. Community members, nonprofit organizations and community groups may submit nominations, and nominees must agree to be considered.

A committee made up of the 2025 Community Volunteer of the Year and other volunteers will review all eligible nominations. The committee’s recommendation will then be presented to the City Council for formal recognition.

Past honorees reflect the many ways residents give back.

  • Peter Carrube, the 2025 honoree, was recognized for more than two decades of service supporting public safety, neighborhood leadership, and community programs.
  • Marie Bennett (2024) was honored for her long-standing commitment to community service and civic involvement.
  • John Tolson (2023) was recognized for consistent volunteer leadership and hands-on support of local programs.
  • Simran Nadig (2022) and Robbie Hidalgo (2021) were each honored for service that strengthened youth programs, community outreach, and nonprofit efforts throughout Simi Valley.

Much of that volunteer service happens in partnership with local nonprofit and service organizations, such as the three local Rotary clubs, as well as the Kiwanis, the Elks, and the Simi Valley Moose Lodge, which all support youth programs, community events and charitable causes year-round.

Volunteer service also plays a critical role in local health and safety organizations, including the Free Clinic of Simi Valley, which provides medical, dental and counseling services to residents in need, and the Simi Valley Police Foundation, which supports public safety initiatives and community-based programs in partnership with the Police Department.
