Sinaloa Middle School educator Sarah Dakin earned the April Teacher of the Month award for her dedicated work with students.

(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — Sarah Dakin steps into her classroom at Sinaloa Middle School ready to change how students see science. She welcomes learners who often struggle in traditional academic settings, and many of her students follow Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to manage their learning needs. Dakin reviews every IEP to understand the accommodations each child requires, then modifies assignments and tests accordingly. She transforms difficult concepts into accessible lessons through hands-on labs and one-on-one interactions, ensuring no student falls behind.

The Simi Valley Education Foundation chose to recognize Dakin for this exemplary work. Her classroom serves as a place where uncertainty gives way to steady progress, and her ability to relate to students of all abilities encourages greater participation during daily lessons.

The stakes for science education extend well beyond the classroom. The U.S. Department of Education emphasizes that in an ever-changing, increasingly complex world, it is more important than ever that the nation's youth are prepared to bring knowledge and skills to solve problems, make sense of information, and know how to gather and evaluate evidence to make decisions. The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) echoes that urgency, noting that the knowledge gained by students today will be essential in addressing some of the most pressing problems society will face in the years ahead — from managing climate change to ensuring adequate food and water supplies to pursuing efficient energy sources. It is in middle school classrooms like Dakin's where that foundation begins to take shape.

Local leaders and business owners recently joined local dignitaries and education foundation members to celebrate Dakin's accomplishments. Community partners providing gifts and tokens of appreciation included Chick-fil-A, Grand Canyon University, Harley's Bowl, Iverson Construction, Logix Federal Credit Union, the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, the Simi Valley YMCA, Eric Little with State Farm Insurance, Ventura County Credit Union, and the Walt Fuller Foundation. Local dignitaries also presented personalized certificates of recognition.

"Together, we send a clear message that the business community supports and values the dedication of our teachers," said Ryan Fowler, Board President of the Simi Valley Education Foundation.

The Teacher of the Month program highlights educators across the Simi Valley Unified School District who demonstrate outstanding performance and make meaningful contributions to their students and schools. Since its founding in 1989, the foundation has invested more than $2.5 million into local public schools through classroom grants, school-wide projects, department enhancements, and scholarships for graduating seniors.
